Bowling Water Drop on Water Surface
What makes water drop floating on water pool without external driving?

The mechanisms of floating liquid drop on liquid pool surface have been studied in the early researches. Those floating liquid drops need some external driving force like vertical oscillation (bouncing drop) or temperature difference between liquid drop and liquid pool that is Leidenfrost effect or Marangoni effect. We report that rolling water drop not only floats but also slides on water pool without external. The surrounding air affected by the motion of the rolling drop is observed. We use particle image velocimetry technique to quantify the flow field in water and in the surrounding air. We show that the shear from surrounding air plays important role to the self-propelled drop.
