Life contains processes of information, material and energy transductions. Most of life science research focus on the genetic information and cellular protein functions. However, very little is known of the cellular energy transduction dynamics. In this presentation, I would like to introduce some new developments of single bacterial cell energetic measurements using fluorescent imaging or other tools. ATP concentration and proton-motive force are the fundamental energetic and physiological conditions of cells. There are several new developments on the single cell ATP, membrane potential, intracellular pH and ion concentration measurements. Using these new techniques, we can study bacterial cell energetic responses to external stresses and the cellular process at single-cell level.
